Climate, ventilation and the season problem

The most common winter fix - sealing the coop up to keep it warm - is what causes the frostbite it was meant to prevent. Moisture is the variable, not temperature.

Most coop-climate advice is upside down. It treats a chicken like a person who is cold, and prescribes sealing gaps, adding insulation and putting in a heater. Each of those makes the actual failure mode worse.

A hen wears a down jacket she grew herself and roosts with her feet under her body. She is well equipped for cold air. What she is not equipped for is standing in a humid box overnight while moisture condenses on her comb. That is where frostbite comes from, and the moisture comes from her - from droppings and from breath - which means the only way out of the coop is ventilation.

The three variables, in order

  1. Moisture. Droppings and respiration release water continuously into an enclosed coop. It has to leave, or it condenses on birds and on timber.
  2. Air movement at bird height. A draft blowing across roosting birds strips warmth and is the thing to avoid. Ventilation above their heads is not a draft.
  3. Temperature. Genuinely last. Standard laying breeds tolerate serious cold, and a heater is far more likely to cause a problem than solve one.

Winter

The winter job is to get moisture out while keeping wind off the birds. That means keeping vents open - not closing them - keeping bedding dry and deep, and blocking drafts at roost level only. A coop with frost on the inside walls in the morning is telling you it needs more ventilation, not less.

Heaters are the other winter question, and the honest answer is that most flocks in most of the US do not need one. Where one is genuinely useful, a flat radiant panel is a different proposition from a heat lamp: much lower wattage, no bulb to shatter and no exposed element. Summer

In heat everything reverses. Chickens cannot sweat; they lose heat by panting and through their combs, wattles and unfeathered legs. A hot coop with poor airflow is far more dangerous than a cold one, and heat stress kills faster than cold does. Shade, moving air and constant cool water are the whole of the intervention. Material matters less than you would think

Wood, plastic and steel all end up at close to ambient temperature in a coop this size overnight, because the birds themselves are the only meaningful heat source and the air changes several times an hour by design. What material does change is condensation behavior and how easy a coop is to keep dry. Plastic against wood in cold weather is the comparison.

This is a standalone henhouse with no attached run, so the published footprint is all enclosed floor. That makes it one of the few coops on this site where the generous reading and the honest reading are the same number.

17.3 sq ft supports four standard hens at the 4 sq ft figure. The listing says four to six. Four is right; six is a winter of pecked backs.

Double-walled polyethylene is the reason to buy it. There is no end grain to rot, no seam for mites to colonize, and it hoses out in minutes - the single biggest practical difference between a coop you keep clean and one you avoid.

Flat radiant panels warm the birds near them rather than heating the air, which is the correct approach in a coop that must stay ventilated.

UL certification is the specification to insist on. Coop fires are overwhelmingly caused by heat lamps and uncertified units, and a coop is full of dust and dry bedding.

Most flocks in most US climates do not need supplemental heat at all. Cold-hardy breeds handle hard frost; what kills them is damp and draft, not temperature.

Heat kills far more backyard birds than cold does. A fan is the hot-climate equivalent of a coop heater, and it is more often the right purchase.

The shutter matters: it closes when the fan is off, so the same opening is not a winter draft.

760 CFM is generous for a backyard coop, which means it can run at lower speed and quieter for the same effect.

Questions people actually ask

+Do chickens need a heated coop in winter?
Usually not. Standard laying breeds handle cold well when they are dry and out of the wind, and a heated coop brings its own risks - fire, and birds that never acclimate and are then badly exposed if the power fails. Where supplemental heat genuinely makes sense, a low-wattage flat radiant panel is safer than a heat lamp.
+How cold is too cold for chickens?
Healthy adult standard breeds tolerate temperatures well below freezing when they are dry, draft-free and roosting together. The practical limits are frostbite on large single combs and water freezing faster than the flock can drink. Both are managed by moisture control and a heated waterer rather than by heating the coop.
+Should I insulate my chicken coop?
In most climates, no. Insulation reduces airflow and traps moisture, which is the actual cause of winter damage, and the birds are the only heat source it can retain anyway. Prioritize ventilation above roost height and blocking drafts at roost level. In genuinely extreme cold, insulate only alongside increased ventilation, never instead of it.
+What causes frostbite in chickens?
Moisture on combs and wattles in freezing air. The moisture comes from the birds themselves - droppings and breath - and accumulates when a coop is sealed against the cold. Well-ventilated coops in very cold climates routinely have less frostbite than sealed ones in milder places.
+How do I keep chickens cool in summer?
Shade over the run, air moving through the coop, and constant access to cool water. Chickens cannot sweat, so airflow across them does more than anything else. Frozen water bottles and shallow pans in shade help; the coop itself should be as open as security allows.
